For whatever reason, moving the files out of their current folder seems to make them deletable again. If you have file called birthday.mp3, select it in Windows Explorer, press F2 and change the extension - the .mp3 - to something else such as .txt. This was a strange problem because I didn't know if the file actually existed or not.
