If trying to delete it in safe mode like MM suggested doesn't get rid of it you might want to try running CHKDSK to see if it can repair it.

Right click the drive you want to check, then click Properties->Tools. Even on files that it reported read errors, the new copy opens correctly and I do not see any errors. Only a couple of files will play. If it doesn't work, then obviously CHKDSK wasn't able to repair the error you're experiencing. so does that mean it would help? I do appreciate your help very much.

thanks If by "can't back it up" you mean you're getting a CRC error that prevents the backup from completing, then you need to follow the advice in the article you I can barely see messages like volume is clean and Windows has just finished chkdsk. Navigate to the files you can't delete. All Programs, Accessories has the Windows Command Prompt.
