You could be out of range of the network. Ubuntu 10.04 is ancient for Ubuntu and I don't see any reason for new users to start with an old distro. You can only upload photos smaller than 5 MB. MY wireless is now named as Auto Trail (my network name). Wicd provide you with a bit more info about Wifi network than the Gnome network manager. Be smart and install Wicd first before removing the Gnome network manager!
