I removed the entries for 1 of the problem users and deleted their user profile on the server and rebuilt their profile. The people that are having issues with this don't recieve any messages. It is not our antivirus and like you I have had to remind the Microsoft tech support that the Hive Cleanup Service is built into 2008. I found this tool from Microsoft that is handy.
