The first thing you'll need to do is go to Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Services for XP and look for the services that start with "Windows Media Player". (Make that will remove all registry file related to that program you want to remove from your system .

I really hope this works. Turns out of my AVI files was either corrupt or improperly encoded and Media Player kept trying to read it over and over again. December 13, 2009 Jeff Worked for WMP12 on Win7 Pro. Worked like a charm, and I didn't back anything up either. Worked on Windows 7. @Chris you can also drag and drop files onto WMP which is much faster. Thank you Apple for making a product that doesn't do stuff I don't want it to, and never does stuff I Do want.
